But Saturday morning they woke up at 7*30 o’clock in Ottumwa, la. A wreck along the Rock Island lines had held up their train to Kansas City ancMhey.were unable to reach Lawrence until 4*30 o’clock in the afternoon, in time for the mile relay quartet to compete and Hunn and Elliott to run m the special 3,000-meter race.Phalps ran m the special 440-yard dash against Adnan Faulen, Dutch quarter-miler -who is touring the country, but failed to place. Griffin of the Oregon Aggies was second and MacAdow of Kansas was third. Columbus, and lost to Lyons of Illinois, who broke the record, set j g up by the Hawkeye leader last year. Lyons heaved the shot 44 feet, 6 1-2 inches, one-half inch farther than the former mark. Dauber was second, followed by Lovett of Michigan. Spike” Kelson placed fourth in the weight triathlon, which consisted of the hammer throw, shot put, and discus throw. Hawkins of Michigan was first, Shively of Illinois was second and Allman of Michigan State Normal was third. Lovetts of Michigan finished fifth.Although various press sen ices carried reports of the Iowa two-mile relay team placing ■second at the Ohio State relays, the Hawks were competing in the home relay carmcal on Iowa Field Saturday afternoon. The quartet will prop-ably be taken to Drake this weekend however.
