Beginner’s corner — hint explanation: Or mate.87654321If you have trouble beating your chess-playing computer, you are in good company.At the end of December, Garri Kasparov played an impromptu session of blitz games against the chess program Fritz2. The surprising result, as reported by chess computer specialist Frederick Friedel: the micro-com-puter program won nine anddrew four of the 37 games!Afterwards the World Champion offered an evaluation of Fritz: “It does not play the opening especially well. It is strategically weak but tactically very dangerous. And rather than giving up, it always finds a way to create difficulties.”Kasparov estimates the program's rating in speed chess to be 2650 — higher than the ratings of all but the 13 top human players in the world.Of course, the outcome of Kasparov vs. Fritz is misleading. Playing at a standard and much slower time control, Kasparov would probably have not lost a single game.But computers are notoriously difficult opponents in fast chess. Humans need a certain minimum time per move before their ability to judge and intuit kicks in on an effective level. Unlike machines, humans — even world champions — also frequently “blunder'' when they have little time to think over moves.The true test of “man vs. machine will take place next year when Kasparov plays a match at a conventional time limit against Deep Blue — an updated, 1,000-times-f aster version of Deep Thought, which has been the most powerful chess-plaving machine on the planet.Below is a win by Fritz2from Cologne.WHITE WINS THE ROOK
