The Saxon* may have won the battle of number odea but the Redskin* won the war, taking a 5-2 tennis victory over Hastings Thursday.Marshall’s top singles and doubles teams both lost rather convincingly, but the rest'of the Redskins posted impressive victories over their Twin Valley foes.“I was pleased with the performance,” Coach Paul Rauth said afterwards. “We won 5-2, but I would have been happy to squeeze by *3.” The Redskins started off on a shaky note, as No. 1 singles player Scott Hodoval could win just one game in his two sets against Steve Payne.“Hastings always plays tough, Rauth pointed out. “Next to Sturgis, when you face their number one singles and number one doubles, you’re facing the best.”Marshall’s top doubles pairing of Terry Clutter and Francie Russell also lost, 7-5, 1-6, 1-6, but Rauth still liked what he saw.“They might be a little discouraged losing both their matches so far, but as a coach, I think they’re playing well, he said. “They were down 5-1 in the first set and came back to win, so now they know they can play.”After those opening losses, however, it was all Marshall.Second singles player Jeff Filbrandt posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Greg Myers, Rick Weaver overpowered Mike Power 6-1, 6-1 and Greg Taylor whitewashed Carlos Sallinilla, 6-0, 6r0 In doubles play, the second-seeded duo of Duncan Conley and Mark Haslem won 6-2, 6-4, and number three pair Bill Mack and Dieter Hunter came back from a rough start to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory.The Redskins are now 2-0 in league play this season. They will travel to Charlotte for a non-conference match this afternoon.
