LincolnBy Rick HumphreyGazette Sports ReporterLOWESVILLECharles Gunnis determined to have racing this season at East Lincoln Speedway.After having the track’s season-opener postponed two straight Friday nights, Gunn has decided to move his races to Sunday afternoon — at least for this weekend.Gunn, who also promotes races at Carolina Speedway on Saturday nights, leased the track from owner Ralph Nantz at the end of last season. Nantz ran races regularly on Friday nights, and Gunn intended to follow suit until the weather forced a change.“We’re going to give Sundays a try,” said Gunn. “Nothing is set in stone and it’s not something we’re going to obligate ourselvesto.”This weekend is a very opportune time for Gunn to race on Sunday, due to the Hav-A-TampaSouthern All Stars race scheduled for tonight at SunsetSpeedway in Charlotte. Gunn alsocited track preparation as a concern.Some fans have expressed concern about races going late into Sunday evening, but Gunn plans to open the gates at 2 p.m. and racing is scheduled for 4 p.m. He also plans to have racing completed by 8 p.m.“I don’t think there’s a problem with it,” said Nantz, who ran some races on Saturday afternoons when forced to do so by the weather. “There’s no reason there should be a problem.”“Winston Cup runs every Sunday and there’s no logical reason for anybody to complain. 1 don’t see where it would be any different from Friday nights or Saturday afternoon.”Touring seriesFor those who missed the Hav-movedA-Tampa Southern All Star eventWednesday night at Carolina Speedway, the touring series will be in the area two more nights.Tonight, the flock of Super Late Model racers will be at Sunset Speedway in Charlotte and Saturday night at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C.After the weekend, the series will have 14 of its 45 races complete, with the big Hav-A-Tampa Shootout scheduled for September at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Ga.Wednesday winnersScott Bloomquist was the winner of the 50-lap Super Late Model feature Wednesday night, while Buddy Smith grabbed his first victory of the season in the Limited Late Model event.In other action, Dale Stiles beat Johnny Bridges and Joe Robinson to the checkered flag in theThunder and Lightning feature,while Robert Long won the Modified 4 cylinder event. Judson Devine and Phillip White finished behind Long.In the Stock 4-cylinder event, Billy Halk took the checkered flag followed by Larry Stone andJason Edison.The Super Stock division was unable to race Wednesday night, but will run for a double purse Saturday nightOther eventsLincoln County Speedway and Carolina Speedway will host regular shows Friday and Saturday nightLincoln County, rained out last Friday night, plans to hold its second race of the season with all divisions in action. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and racing begins at 8 p.m.Carolina Speedway also plans a regular night of racing Saturday, with action beginning at 8 p.m.
