Two WVCSchools Seek Basketball CoachesBy United Press InternationalWheeling College hired Jim O’Brien and Fairmont State promoted Dave Cooper to head coach, leaving the University of Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan in the West Virginia Conference looking for head basketball coaches.Wesleyan also needs an athletic director to succeed Sam Ross, who resigned for another position at the school. Naming of an athletic director could come within 10 days, and the naming of a basketball coach would follow shortly, a Wesleyan spokesman said Thursday.The University of Charleston has interviewed four candidates for the position left open by the March 8 resignation of Glen Korobov. Terry Truax, an assistant coach at Mississippi State, was on the Charleston campus for an interview Thursday.Charleston also has interviewed Henry Dickerson, an alumnus who was Korobov’s assistant; Tex Williams, a successful high school coach who apparently has recovered from high blood pressure cited as the reason for his yielding the St Albans job, and John Thurston, an assistant at James Madison University and former head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson (N.J.).Rich Meckfessel, the Charleston athletic director who was head coach at Charleston the 14 seasons before Korobov, was among applicants for the Wesleyan coaching job Wesleyan officials dismissed Paul Toth after two seasons, and sued him in a dispute over summer basketball camp fundsWheeling tapped O’Bnen, a former St. Joseph’s (Pa.) guard, from the University of Oregon where he was an assistant O’Bnen was an assistant one season a decade ago at Wheeling, which won only three games last seasonThe elevation of Cooper, an NAIA All-America guard at Fairmont, to succeed the legendary Joe Retton was expected.
