MHS netters edge HillsdaleHILLSDALE — Marshall opened the tennis season with a 4-3 win over Twin Valley foe Hillsdale Tuesday. Using a new 12-point tiebreaker, four of the matches went that route.Hornet Scott Kneen needed a tiebreaker to defeat Marshall’s third singles player Rick Weaver in straight sets. Pat McAvoy did the same to No 4 Redskin Greg Taylor.Mike Vear and Jeff Kalusak needed a tiebreaker to defeat Marshall’s No. 1 doubles team of Terry Clutter and Francie Russell in three sets. Russell, a senior girl, is permitted to play boys’ tennis due to a loophole in the MHSAA rules, although boys cannot play on a girls’ team in the fall. Russell was unable to play girls’ tennis in the fall due to her participation in swimming Marshall's Duncan Conley^ and Mark Haslem turned the tiebreaker in their favor with a straight set victory in No. 2doubles.Redskins Bill Mack and Dieter Hunter dominated third doubles with a pair of 6-1 scores.Seniors Scott Hodoval and Jeff Filbrandt came through with big wins in the top singles matches.
