yr w wThe skv fell in on the World Hockey Association franchisei win Calgary earlier this week as Scotty Munro told a selected two of his plans to ditch the Broncs. However, reports outof Alberta seem to indicate that the real loser could be ScottyAs big a wheeler dealer as there is in hockey in Western Canada, the Scotsman apparently told radio announcer .Joe Carburv. and the Albertans’ Dick Chubey. That was it.That move so incensed the Herald’s sports editor Hal Walker that he wrote in ignoring other people in ourbusiness who have been generous to him the past three years.Munro was pulling a bush league deal which might be all right in Humboldt, Sask.. from whence he came, but is not all right in Calgary, Alla.In issuing his withdrawal statement to Joe Carburv, Munro also conceded to the plea ot Albertan staff member Dick Chu bey that he not say anything about it to anyone, particularly anyone from the Calgary Herald, until after tins newspaper went to press. He did this, taking his telephone off the hookand staying in hiding until it was beyond Herald press time.. I trust he doesn't have the colossal nerve to come to this newspaper for publicity for his Centennials after this piece of treachery.Meanwhile in Edmonton, columnist Wayne Overland also look dead aim at Munro. Three weeks ago when there was a rumble that the Calgary franchise was in trouble we called Scott\ Munro for a comment.“Munro said: ‘You know I wouldn't be to you. ! have 110 thought of dropping out. , That’s when we knew Munro and his backers were out.’’Overland also quoted the Herald's Walker as saying Munro is dead in this town (Calgary) now . . . he survived thaf charity game caper last year, but this finishes him. Overland, who tosses darts with the best of them, concluded his t irade by suggesting that perhaps I he WHA would be better off in the long run, especially il Matskin (Winnipeg's Ben) and Hunter i Edmonton's Bill i can produce a new group of well-financed, dedicated backers in Calgary Because WHA owners require nerve and money and Seotty Munro had neither. Now, if I'm allowed an editorial comment, Munro was right, and wrong. He was right to pull outStrictly from a financial standpoint, it'll cost al least. $1million to get started in the WHA and who knows how long, if ever, it w ill take to show a profitHis Centennials probably cost him M50,00( a year to put on the ice and they manage to sell out the Calgarv Corral with alarming regularity. Add to this the fact that be even makes seme extra money by getting the games telecast live, right in the city' He already has a golden goose and he'd be nuts to take the chance. On the other hand, he was wrong.Wrong to play it the way he did not only to the press and radio people, but also to other WHA franchise holders and he may live to regret it.
