Hi-Toms Play ExhibitionTune Up For Opening GamePlay At Winston On TuesdayBy DAVID LAMM Enterprise Sports WriterTHOMASVILLE - The High P o int-Thomasville Hi-Toms tune up for Tuesday’s Carolina League opener at Winston-Salem by journeying t o Burlington tonight for an exhibition game.Manager Jack McKeon’s club was one of four teams in the 12-team league which did not open its season Sunday. Burlington and Greensboro join the Hi-Toms and Winston-Salem in kicking off their campaigns Tuesday.For tonight’s exhibition. Mc-Keon has said he’ll use all his players in an attempt to come up with a set lineup for the “play for real” games. The Hi-Toms first home appearance is set for Wednesday night, also against Winston-Salem.At present. McKeon, a former Minnesota Twins scout and minor league manager, is loaded with outfielders, first basemen and catchers, but short on pitchers. There are only seven hurlers on the team, three of them having reported this weekend. The newcomers are Garv Fisher, John Rawls and Don McKinley.Either Jack Van Vleck or Dick Bicek. both right-handers, is expected to start against Burlington. Regardless who starts, however, both will see action along with Rawlsand Charles Heintz. a lefty. McKeon hasn’t said who’ll pitch the league opener.The battle for the first base job is between Paul Campbell, Tolia Solaita and Joe Dodder. The problem there is that all three are left-handed swingers and throwers.He said as soon as the Royals acquire some players, they’ll try to help the local club.The Kansas City official also announced that McKeon will work with the Royals on a fulltime basis following this season.In the outfield, regular work is sought by Ed Moxley, Biff Bracy, Lee Greene, John Sanders and Jim Clark. Dodder is also available in the outfield. Clark, by the way, won’t be around for the first few games. He was called back to California by the death of his grandmother.Catching duties will be split between Darryl Cousins, John Francis and Hal SmithApparently. Tom Ragland (second base), Steve Hertz (third base) Phil Spyres (shortstop) have infield jobs nailed down, at least for now.In addition to the arrival of the new pitchers over the weekend, the Hi-Toms greeted Lou Gorham, player personnel director for Kansas City’s new expansion team. The Royals, who join the American League next year, Gorham talked with Hi-Tom official and discussed the possibility of a future working agreement between the Royals and the Hi-Toms.In Sunday’s league openers, bases on balls were plentiful Kinston, Wilson, Ports-asmouth and Lynchburg emerged victorious.Kinston edged the Raleigh-Durham Mets 1-0 at Kinston with the aid of 10 walks. The Eagles managed only three hits before 1,663 fans.At Rocky Mount. Wilson scored a 5-2 victory. Six Rocky Mount hurlers gave up 13 walks. Wilson’s Chuck Murray went the distance in the win despite eight free passes.Jim Procopio’s three-run homer in the ninth lifted I,vnchburg over Salem, 7-4, at Lynchburg. Eighteen walks were issued during the game, 11 by Lynchburg pitchers.Portsmouth whipped Peninsula 6-5 at Peninsula.The same teams play tonight, just switching sites. Kinston visits the Mets (at Raleigh), Portsmouth travels to Peninsula, Lynchburg journeys to Salem and Rocky Mount pays a visit to Wilson.COME TO SHEPP’S!!
