StuartLivesBy BILL FLEISCHMAN (Special To Courier-Times)PHILADELPHIA — DickStuart didn’t disappoint anyone last night. The Phillies’ new first baseman bungled three fielding plays before the largest opening day audience (31.923) at Connie Mack Stadium since1960. Stuart ordinarily acceptscriticism of his ineptness at first base, but last night he admitted. “I felt kind of stupid on that one.”‘‘That one” occurred in the eighth inning. With one out and San Francisco’s Matty Alou on first, Willie Mays Died to Johnny CaJlison in right field. Alou sprinted for third base, but Caliison made a running catch near the foul line and fired the ball to Stuart.Like a man watching water swirl past in a gutter. Stuart nonchalantly eyed the ball as it trickled pasl him toward home plate. Fortunately, shortstop Kuben Amaro hadUpbacked up the play and he stepped on the bag for thedoub'e play.“I saw the runner at thirdso I tought Callison’s catch was the third out,” said Stuart in the Phillies’ locker room. I'm sure the runner thoughtthere were three outs also.”he added. Even if the ballhad rolled to the dugout, wewould have gotten the runner— he had to back track toreturn to first.”* * *RepuiWhen Stuart appeared atthe plate in the ninth inning, members of the stadium’s Loyal Booing Society greeted him. And he struck out “My fan club showed up that last time, he quipped.Does manager Gene Maueh wince wh n he hears the boos for Stuart?“Stu will hit a couple on the roof.” declared Maueh, and they’ll ail be down tohug him.”Anyway, with Stuart around, he’ll take the fieldingpressure off Wes Covington.
