Suspension UpheldBy IHSAA AgainstLawrenceburg AthleteLAWRENCEBURG — The suspension from participating in spring sports for Lawrenceburg Tiger athlete Jim Sturgeon as the result of an incident at the Con-nersville regional basketball tournament still stands.Sturgeon, coach Bud Batemanand Lawrenceburg school officials, appeared at a special hearing in the offices of the Indiana High School Athletic Association in Indianapolis recently but the IHSAA refused to lift the penalty and the Tiger star will not be allowed to play baseball or track during the remainder of his senior year.In upholding its previous actionbanning Sturgeon from future sports competition, the IHSAA maintained a policy of long standing. Seldom does the associationreverse itself on such matters. Otto Albright of Cayuga, president of the board of control, questioned Sturgeon, and according to reports, received the athlete's admission that he had struck Larry Curry, Versailles player, after the regional game between the two schools had wound up in a narrow 72-71 Versailles victory.Sturgeon, who had won four letters in football and basketball, needed letters in spring track and baseball to become Lawrenceburg’s first 16-letter man. He placed 4th in the state track meet quarter-mile run in both 1958 and 1959 and last lear set a new Indianapolis semi-state record in the event. He holds the 100-yd. dash and broad jump records in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference of which Lawrenceburg is a member.The EIAC had requested thespecial hearing in order to giveSturgeon a chance to tell his side of the incident.
