O’GOOFTY SUGGESTS GIRL UMPIRES IN BIG LEAGUESBy COL. JOE O’GOOFTY,Ex-Big League Pitcher fMale).CHATTANOOGA. April 13.—For the last few days I have been watching the work of Jackie Mitchell, the lady pitcher who struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig on six pitched balls. All I can say is that it’s a good thing for the Athletics that the Vassar girls haven’t got a team in the American League.I am sending a telegram to Walter Johnson tonight, urging him to put dresses on Nick Altrock and let him pitch the opener against the Athletics. A pitcher nowadays doesn't need a curve so much as he needs a permanent wave.I am going to have a talk with John Heydler, president of the National League, and Bill Harridge, Frank Navin, acting president of the American League, and see if wre can’t have some lady umpires appointed. If we are going to have lady ball players, you can easily see the necessity of lady umpires. Otherwise a good-looking lady pitcher would throw nothing but strikes, and what chance would a mere man have trying to steal second with some baby like Bebe Daniels waiting to take the throw from the catcher. Why, even old Tommy Con-nally would call a male ball player out on a close play at first if Norma Shearer was covering the base.Suppose Joan Crawford were batting and Lefty Grove pitching. Suppose the count wTere three and two and Lefty shot one right across the middle of the old wish and Joan didn’t budge. Do you think an umpire like Roy Van Graflin could call that a strike?
