The Morgantown Touchdown Club will honor Sunday one of West Virginia’s greatest basketball stars of the era preceding World War Rudy Baric, captain and leading scorer of the WVU team that won the National InvitationTournament in 1942, will receive the club’s Proficiency Award at its annual basketball banquet inthe Hotel Morgan.Baric won the Most Valuable Player award in the NIT.The next year, as a graduate student, he coached the Mountaineer basketball team made up largely of freshmen to an excellent 14-7 record.He served as an Army lieutenant during World War II and was severely wounded during action in France. He returned toWVU after the war for more f RUDY BARICgraduate study, while still hobbled by his wounds standing success at Penns GroveBanc later coached with out- (N.J.) High School, until his retirement from coaching a few years ago.The TD Club also will present the State High School Outstanding Player Award to a schoolboy star yet to be identified.A member of the WVU team will receive the Roger (Shorty) Hicks Award made annually in memory of this Mountaineer star killed in action in World War II.Hicks was a regular on the 1942 team and a close friend of Baric.Coach Lou Rossini of N e w York University will be the main speaker on the program scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Hotel Morgan ballroom.Rossini is well-known to Mountaineer fans as coach of some outstanding teams met bv WVU.Guests will include the WVU basketball squad and coaches, representatives of the various State high school championship teams, and coaches Rick Mack-fessel of Morris Harvev andTom Ackerman of Bethanv.
