Phy Ed Value Related by Fabian JacobsValue of physical education was explained Monday evening by Fabian Jacobs, special area teacher of elementary physical education, at Forest Park School ;PTA meeting.“Our Travel Through Space” was Jacob’s topic for his lecture-demonstration. Sixty-two children of grades one through six performed to illustrate the progress by grade.Reasons for teaching tumbling, said Jacobs, are these: To orient the body in different positions and to teach ita relationship to surrounding areas; to instill courage and a sense of assurance in the child; to quicken reaction time; for enjoyment.Children demonstrated such acquired skills as the countdown check, backward and forward rolls, balance, inflight check and partner stunts.Physical education can be called by several names, including gym, games and rhythm, said Jacobs. He said physical education is teaching through the physical body, not just teaching the body.He added that physical education also teaches body skills, cooperation and sportsmanship and furnishes a laboratory for the child to see how he affects group family living and how he gets along with his fellow classmates.
