Vogler takes early point leadRich Vogler won Sunday's 30-!ap Crestliner Vans-USAC Sprint Car Series opener at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, to take the early series point lead. His victory came in the Coors Light-Rose Brothers Trucking Chevy vacated at the end of the 1985 season by defending series titlist Rick Hood.Vogler took over the lead on a restart at lap 22 from Warren Mockler, who had led the first 21 laps after starting next to pole-sitter Vogler.The day's fastest qualifier,Larry Gates, second-fastest Rick Ungar and Kokomo driver Steve Butler, who was fourth quickest, were unable to earn feature starting spots. Butler, who was run-nerup to Hood in the points race last year, drove the G R RacingMcGonigal Buick-Cadillaeeartoa fifth-place finish in the fourth heat that was won by Kokomo Speedway co-champion Tony Elliott. Burlington driver LouieByBobLongwithMann was not among the top 30 qualifiers.The All-Star Circuit of Champions will race Saturday at Eldora with USAC returning April 26.Mears fully recovered Rick Mears is back to full time racing and intends to drive the Pennzoil Z-7 Special on all road courses as well as ovals in 1986.Now walking without a noticebable limp, although he admits there is still some pain in his right foot, Mears ran near the front of Sunday’s Dana 200 at Phoenix before being sidelined with mechanical problems.Since his injuries, suffered in late 1984 at St. Pie, Canada, Mears had driven only six times. Hestarted five Indy car races last year, winning at Pocono, finishing second in the Michigan 200 and recording the fastest racing lap in the Indianapolis 500,AH those races, however, were on oval tracks. His substitute in all 1985 road races was AI Unser, who won the championship driving the Pennzoil Z-7 Special. Mears passed up the races to concentrate on therapy to regain the use of both his damaged feet.Mears aid a masterful job testing for the October race at Phoenix, unofficially breaking the track record. He decided afterward to turn the car over to Unser. who drove it to a new track record, the pole position and his first victory of the season, using the setup Mears had developed.In gratitude, Unser announced at the CART award banquet last November in Miami he was turning over the No, 1 he earned as champ to Mears to use on the Pennzoil car this year.
