Harden’s heave-ho ignites ElonBy ED PRICETimes-NewsELON COLLEGE - Mike Harden had to leave to put the fight into the Fightin’ Christians. After the Elon baseball coach was ejected in the top of the eighth, his team rallied for three runs with two out in the bottom of the inning for a 5-4 win over South Carolina-Spartanburg Wednesday. The Christians were down 4-2 when John Wadsworth started the rally with a single to left. Mike Beckom then walked on a 3-2 pitch so close, opposing pitcher Greg Houston danced off the mound anticipating the strike call.USCS coach John Daurity pulled Houston in favor of his relief ace, Chris Fowler. But Rick Ulasewich greeted the sidearmer by ripping a double to left, scoring Wadsworth and making the score 4-3. Freshman shortstop Chris York delivered the telling blow with a single through the box and into center field that scored the tying and winning run.“It was a low fastball,“ the former Eastern Randolph standout said. “I just hit it hard and hit it up the middle and got a hit.”“You have to tip your hatto Elon,” Daurity said.“They rose to the occasion.”Harden was ejected for arguing ball-and-strike calls. He took up a position off the field down the right-field line from the home dugout, but was then told to move, and he watched the remainder of the game from the press box.If Harden’s ejection had been a psychological ploy, it could not have been more successful.“That got us pumped,” admitted York.“It was pretty obvious today we played without emotion for six innings and I got run and the kids decided they wanted to play baseball,” Harden said after his team won its fifth straight and improved to19-9, with assistant Jim Schlossnagle picking up the coaching save.USCS, ranked 14th in NCAA Division II, fell to20-9. The Christians also defeated the Rifles in Spartanburg, 16-7 on March 27, helping to avenge a pair of losses in last year’s NAIA Area VII tournament.Daurity was second-guessing himself for his use of relievers, but Harden credited his players.“They played with some intensity and some focus on what they wanted to do hit-Please see HARDEN/C7Julie Stovall / Times-NewsElon’s Mike Beckom, No. 36, attempts to steal second as Miller Robinson covers the bag.
