Young; grapplerPapas best f;rookie’John Papas of Dolton, was awarded the annua Outstanding Rookie of tht Year trophy for the 1973-74 junior wrestling season.John is a member of the Hazel Crest wrestling team which belongs to the United States WrestlingFederation.Although this is John's first full season of competition. he began wrestlingat the end of the 1970-71 season as a member of the Scanlan playground team in Roseland coached by Les Sparrey, well known forturning out state wrestlingchampions. John showed great promise early when,with less than one month'sinstruction, he finishedsecond in the Martin LutherKing tournament and fourthin the Lewis university Tourney at 50 pounds.After a two-year lavoffV 'T‘--- WJohn joined the Hazel Crest team this past season and immediately began where he left off. He startled thecoaching staff by defeating highly touted Guy Milburn. last year’s 50 pound champ, for the first string varsity 55 pound berth.He went on to lose only three dual matches all year, two by the slimmest of margins, one point, but subsequently reversedthose losses, winning one bya pin.John was unable to compete in the state tournament. He is scheduled toenter a state tourney in Iowa during the Faster vacation period.Papas is continuing his training under the watchful eye of Sparrey at his newly formed wrestling program in Riverdale Park.
