Eccentric Hurler Is Working HardiMr. Cletus (Boots) Poffenbeg-er, behaving himself as he intends to do, should *be not only a winning ptcher for the Nashville Vols, but a great drawing card as well. He’s a character out of the earlier days and oozes color.Poffenberger is a born competitor who likes to be where the bullets fly thickest. He likes to pick his spots, as a great many other pitchers do, but Mr. Poffenberger differs from most of them. The others pick the soft spots and he takes the hard ones.“it never gets a guy nothin’ to pitch against them second division clubs,” explains Mr. Boots in his own homespun philosophy, “Give me the first division clubs.” He was that way in his early days in the minors and balked against the easy assignments. He was that way when he went up to the Detroit Tigers. Major or minor, he wanted to take on the leaders. He did not always beat them, but he was in there pitch-! ing and you can’t jail a fellow for that.Boots has a strong arm and always has had strong opinion regarding his own ability. Few players ever got to the top without believing completely in their own ability. The difference between them and Mr. Poffenberger was that the latter was more frank about the whole thing. He came out publicly with his opinions, never endeavoring to hide under a mask of false modesty.Poffenberger had his difficulties. They said in the majors he was fond of the night clubs. “But,” he avers, “nobody seemed to care where I spent my nights when I was winning. But if I lost a couple, they let it out.”; All that is past and Boots de-j clares a new leaf has been turn-j ed. If it stays turned, you can I look for Mr. Boots Poffenberger | back in the big leagues. He can’t ! miss.
