DUTCH THURSTON AND WILLIAMS MATCHEDA big surprise was sprung on Bakersfield ring-followers last evening when it was announced at the Club Cafe that Charlie Thurston, welterweight champion of the Pacific Coast, had agreed to meet Kid Williams in a fifteen round go on April 25, at 148 pounds at six o’clock on the night of(the contest. Before the Williams-Hart fignt wasarranged, a determined effort w’as | made to bring Thurston and Williams together, but the Dutchman held out; for 145 pounds and Williams would not fight him at that weight; in consequence the other match was made.Yesterday morning a letter from Hart wTas received at the club which stated that on account of illness of relatives. Benny would be unable! to meet Thurston this month. Hartsaid his manager was away and he took the sole responsibilty of cancelling the date. His action put the promoters of the fight in a pretty tight box and they at once got to w'ork on j the Dutchman. He finally consented to disregard the prerogatives of a! champion and consented to meet the “Kid” at 148 pounds, six o’clock. A ! five hundred dollar side bet is to be put up by each contestant.Whether Hart’s letter resulted from a case of “cold feet” or not, is of! course, a matter of conjecture. At all events it was instrumental in bringing the two admittedly fastest welterweights on the Pacific Coast together. Both fighters have already made their | reputations and local sports are looking forward to the best all around mill that has ever been pulled off in thej cty.
