By Marlin SmithThe New Braunfels Fighting Unicorn baseball nine extended its winning streak to eight games before seeing it broken in the district opener by John Marshall, 1-0 The Unicorns had defeated Del Valle, 10-0, Friday to end their non-district play for the year.The loss left the Big Blue with a 10-4 season record and0-1 in district. The Unicorns will attempt to get back on the winning track Friday against Holmes at 4 p.m. inSan Antonio.The game against Del Valle lasted only six innings because of a ten-run rule. The Unicorns gave hints of things to come when they scored three runs in the top of the first Greg Baenziger singled and Gene Reinarz was hit by a pitch before Acker boomed a double to score Baenziger, Gary Simon sent Reinarz and Acker home with a single.The Unicorns found the scoring punch again in the third with Baenziger leading off with a single and goingto third when the left fielder let the ball get away from him. Reinarz singled him home. Acker was on by way of an error and Johnny Mc-Kinnis walked. Reinarz and Acker scored on wild pitches and McKinnis scored on Andy Reininger’s sacrifice fly toright field.The Big Blue scored two more runs in the fifth on two hits and two Cardinal errors. Acker and Andy Rei* ninger picked up the hits while Acker and Simon scored the runs.The final Unicorn run came in the top of the six as Greg Baenziger doubled, and went to third on the right fielder’s error and scored on Acker’s single.Floyd Hoffman went the route in picking up his fifth win against one defeat while striking out 10 Cardinal batters and walking one. He allowed just two hits. Darryl Acker and Greg Baenzigerwielded the big bats for theBlue as each went three forPaul Stanley was the victim in the Unicorn’s loss as he pitched a two * hitter against the Rams but so did the Marshall pitcher and the Unicorns came out on the lower end of the score. Stanley struck out 10 and walked two as he lost his third game of the year, the second by a1-0 count, against four wins.The only score of the game came in the third inning after a Ram walked. A pickoff throw then went astray and the runner headed for third and there too the ball went astray and the runner scored the all important run. They were the only errors of the game for the Unicorns.The Unicorns threatened several times but could not pick up the clutch hits with the men on base.
