Karr, formerly the compliance officer for the athletic department, was the interim AD filling in for Cory Schwartz, who left last year.Karr still has mountains to climbBy MATIAS SAAR INews-MinerWith sports competition at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Finished for the current school year, it’s time for Forrest Karr to take a little vacation, right?Not a chance—there’s still way too much to do.“It’s still really busy,” said Karr, the First-year athletic director, earlier this week.For starters, there’s corporate sponsorship packages for associate athletic director Patrick Lee and Karr to redesign, a vital jobthat is a primary funding source in the athletics budget.Then there’s work related to the late-signing period that begins April 12 for which UAF coaches are presently “feverishly recruiting.”There’s a proposal to consider from a school that hopes to join the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as a replacement for the departed Humboldt State University.Throw in a restructuring of ticket prices and the consolidation of Nanook radio coverage .There’s also planning for events like theresurrected All-Sports Banquet on April 14, a university-sponsored golf tournament on June 16, and a myriad of summer sports camps.Not to mention a meeting next week with higher-ups to discuss Karr’s No. 1 priority, a new strength and conditioning facility.Despite the bustle, Karr, a former college hockey goaltender, still manages to sneak away for weekend mountaineering jaunts in the Alaska Range.“It’s a fairly demanding year-round job,” understated Karr about being athletic direc-See KARR, Page C10
