In two years they organized a baseball team of their own youth and nationality and actively supported it from then until 3946 — that last game being a 3-2 defeat in 13 innings.The team was always the envy of other city teams with its large following — which also produced some “tidy” gate receipts when the hat was passed after the games. Always was the Volga Aid team well-equipped with colorful uniforms and jackets . . . and always, too, was it in contention in a 1-2-3 battle for the championship with several titles in (he late 1920s and on into the ’40s before running into a long drought as the Pine Club took the fore.Managers during this era of sandlot ball included Christ (Dick) Welsch, David (Schmit-ty) Kober, Ernst Herman, Connie Kaiser, Johnny Schmidt, Alex Chrispens, Zeamann Dal-heimer, Henry Ochlberg, and John Thornton.Former players are now scattered throughout the city in a variety of trades or businesses, as well as into other parts of the country’.
