O 'BrienScores Triple for RiponBy DON O’BRIENOSHKOSH — Fleet-footed Kelly O'Brien turned in a triple victory lor the top individual performance of the night here Friday, but it vielded no better than a second place finish in Class B for the Ripon High School track team at the first Titan Invitational inr the new Kolf Sports Center,With a 25 point total, the Tigers trailed Milwaukee Messmer by six points in the battle for the team championship and finished 3*4 points ahead of third place Sheboygan Falls. Seventeen other schools trailed the leaders, including Mayville with four points, Camp* bellsport with three and St. Mary’s Springs with V/2, among area representatives.Runner-Up Again For the Ripon squad, it was the second near miss in less than a week. Tom Calien’s talented crew finished third with 151/2 points in the Class B division of Madison West Relays last Saturday.Just as in that test, the scoring burden fell principally on the sinewy shoulders of O'Brien, the senior ace who was also the Tigers’ leading scorer last year.He won the 70 yard high hurdles in nine seconds flat, took the 70 yard low hurdles in 8.5 seconds and hit acareer high of 22 feet even to corral another first in the long jump. With 18 points, he was the top scorer of the field and the only triple winner in either Class A or B. He had been the wily double winner at the West Relays last weekend. With his 22 foot leap in the long jump, O'Brien moved within four inches of a school record that was established 06 years agy by B911 Cowan. No other jumper in school history has exceeded 21 feet. All of the other Ripon points came in the high jump, where juniors Bob Sather and Jim Kohl both cleared 64, but had to settle for second and third places, respectively, because they had more misses than the winner, Tim Cummens of Kettle Moraine. The latter was also credited with a 64 effort.Cummens, who was runnerup to O'Brien in the high hurdles, was the meet'ssecond best scorer with 10 points. Berlin’s Scott Holl-maier had seven, with a second in the 60-yard dash and a third in the long jump.Krause 2nd Half miler Larry Krause accounted for all of Mayviile’s points with a second place mark of 1:59.2 in his special-ty.Campbellsporfs points came on a fourth by tarry Martiny in the half mile and a fifth by Gletm Stommel in the two mile. Scoring for St. Mary’s Springs was John Murphy, who shared fourth place in the quarter mile.Springs’ coach Mike Carlin expressed pleasure with Murphy’s showing in the 440-yard dash. “John’s a very competitive runner. I only wish he could have run in the section with Henry (Wilbert) and Baltz (Rick),” he stated. As it was, Murphy won his section of the 440 with aclocking of 54 seconds and finished in a tie for fourth place with another Chilton runner, Ken Gasch.A total of 29 runners competed in the Class B two-mile run, and this may have hampered Ledger distance star Rich Petrie, who was just out of the money in sixth place. ’‘Rich got boxed in at the start, and then he fought his way into fourth, but sort of petered out after that,” Carlin said.Although it didn't score, Carlin also had to be well satisfied with the p e r-formance of his 880-yard relay team. Comprised of Paul Smet, Kevin Heaney, Mike Ulrich and Murphy, it was clocked in a very commendable 1:38.6.Dramatic RaceOne of the night’s most dramatic races unfolded in the 440-yard dash where the No. 1 and 3 finishers in last year’s Class B state meet, Wilbert Henry (Germantown) and Rick Baltz (Chilton), hooked up.This time, Baltz gained the upper hand in their rivalry. He took a substantial lead over Henry into the final turn, and the Germantown runner was never able to close the gap-Baltz was timed in 50.9 seconds and Henry, who looked like he was coastingthrough most of the race, was a second behind in 51.9 seconds.Turn SctrtsMilwaukee Mwnw 31, (Upon 29# Shtbovian Pall* *1%, ICOTtt' Morain*19, Chilton f7Vz, Germantown 15.
