The Kings went undefeated in the championship tourney in Portage over the weekend.Gilroy nets hatBrian Gilroy netted three goals in the 4-2 final wins over the hostTerriers.His first goal opened the scoring on a powerplay just past the halfway mark of the first period. Billy Fraser gave Dauphin a 2-0 lead with 1:04 left in the period, but John Fletcher beat Sheldon Kruk with 10 seconds left in the period to make the score 2-1. Fletcher scored the only goal of the middle frame to put the teams on an even footing heading into the final period.Gilroy’s powerplay goal early in the final stanza proved to be the winner. Richard Oswald passed up an empty netgoal to give Gilroy his hat-trick with 18 seconds left to play.Portage took six oftournament with a 7-1 thrashing of The Pas. Gilroy, Kurt Koshowski and Oswald all scored two goals. Greg Yaworsky netted a single. David Dorion scored for The Pas. T.J. Needham faced 49 shots in The Pas net, while Chad Cobbe made 12 saves in the Dauphin net.Dauphin nipped The Pas 3-2 in their next game, as Oswald scored twice and Yaworsky once. Kruk faced 19 shots, while counterpart Kenny McKinnon stopped 42.The final round robin contest saw the Kings double the Terriers 6-3. Gordon Dudar and Oswald scored twice each to pace Dauphin. Dale McQuarrie and Yaworsky had singles. David Woodward. Kirby Bergen and Mike Kamski replied for Portage. Kruk turned aside 19 shots for the Kings,The last Dauphin minor bantam team to win the title was the 1977 edition.
