A trip back through the dusty newspaper files produced the Information that was requestedAccording to newspaper stories, the first basketball banquet for the Jasper Wildcats was held in 1945. In 1944, Coach “Cabby O'Neil and his Wildcats were guests of the Kiwanis Club at a noon luncheon at which time Paul Finch was the principal speaker and passed out awards.According to our records, tomorrow night's affair will mark the 20th annual basketball banquet sponsored by the Jasper Kiwanis Club. The principal speakers down through the yeers Include the following:1945 — Bill Fox, sports editor of The Indianapolis News; Guy Red Mackey. athletic director of Purdue and Joe Deinhart, assistant football and cage coach at Purdue.1946 — Don Ping. Evansville College football coach and Glenn Curtis. Indiana State Teacher's College baseball coach.1947 — L. V. Phillips, commissioner of the IHSAA1948 — Bernard Peck Hickman, head basketball coach of the University of Louisville.1949 — Adolph Rupp, head basketball coach of University of Kentucky.1950 — Bill Corum. INS and New York Journal-American sports writer and president of Churchill Downs.1951 — Bob Polk, head basketball coach of Vanderbilt.1952 — E. S. Eddie Hickey, head basketball coach of St. Louis University.1953 — Harry Combes, head basketball coach of University of Illinois.1954 — Paul D.
