Bill and Bob Peoples, Butch Starin and Stu Kellner advanced to the open singles semifinals in the state handball tournament with third-roundand quarterfinal victories at the Butte Elks courts Friday.Bob Peoples will go against Starin and Bill Peoples will meet Kellner in Saturday’s semifinals. Both matches begin at 10 a.m.Bill Peoples, who has already captured four state singles trophies, downed Rick Kaiser of Bozeman in the third round 21-4, 21-6. He then defeated Ken Rudio of Helenain two games in the quarterfinals, 21-10, 21-14.Bob Peoples slipped by Great Falls’ Tim Boland 21-18, 21-20 in the afternoon round. But hehad to go three games in the quarterfinals before eliminating Dave Books of Missoula, 21-12, 10-21, 21-7.City singles champion Butch Starin clipped Bob Zadick of Great Falls 21-18, 21-11, in his third-round contest, then breezed by Billings’ Chuck Robbins 21-17, 21-6.Stu Kellner of Helena, the only non-Butte player to make it to the semifinals, defeated Butte’s Dan Sullivan 21-12, 21-13 in the early round. In the quarterfinals, he ousted two-time state singles champion Norm Gray, another Helena man, by scores of 21-7, 21-18,Only one open doubles match was completed by press time. Kellner and Bill Leaphart of Helena defeated Butte’s BobPeoples and Ed Kavran 21-14, 21-13.Kellner and Leaphart will play the winner of the match between Robbins-Schilley (Billings) and Panisko-Kuskovich (Butte), at noon Saturday.John Badovinac and Starin faced the defending doubles champions from Great Falls, Bob Zderick and Damon Schlenski. And Norm Gray and Dan Humi met Rudio and Keith Sell in the other quarterfinals match Friday night.The winners of those two matches will face each other inSaturday’s semis, at noon.In the Masters singles competition, two Great Falls players, Jim Ritter and Ed Abbot, Butte’s Jerry Lyons and Clyde Angove of Helena all advanced to the semifinals.Angove meets Ritter and Abbot duels Lyons in Saturday’s matches beginning at 9 a.m.A Dair of Butte doublespairteams gained semi berths in the Masters doubles.
