South Boston Speedway»» M ■■ 1—■■■■■■ ■■ — ■■■ ■ « ........Ray Hendrick And Bugs Stevens To Renew Racing Battle SundaySOUTH BOSTON, Va. — Ray Kendrick and Carl “Bugs” Stevens are expected to renew their battle Sunday ia the 200-lap modified feature as Soulh Boston Speedway opens its 1968 racing season.Hendrick, of Richmond, Va., and Stevens, of Rehoboth, Mass., staged a wild battle in last Sunday’s Dogwood 300 race at Martinsville Speedway- Hendrick turned in the driving job of the day, coming all the way from the back of the field to lead the race.He started on the pole position, spun out on the very first lap and fought his way back through the pack. He eventually built up a lap lead over Stevens only to have his engine blow 50 laps from the finish.Stevens, o£ course, captured the NASCAR national modified championship last year and is the point leader at the moment after Sunday’s victory. “That South Boston is a fast track and Ave’U all be honking Sunday,” Stevens said.He is expected to joined by several other “Yankee” drivers in search of the $800 and championship points that go to the winner. But Hendrick still Will be the man to beat. Lastseason, he scored seven victories on the fast, three-eighths mile track, more than any other driver.Besides the big modified feature, the 255-lap opening program calls for a 35-lap late model sportsman feature and two ten-lap heats. Joe Thurman of Rocky Mount, Va., number two man in last season’s NASCAR national sportsman standings. Sonny Hutchins and Runt Harris, both of Richmond, are among the drivers planningto compete in both divisions. Harris is the track modified champion but also has a late model Chcvelle sportsman ready to run.Modified drivers will time trial for starting positions and only the fastest 30 cars will start. On the line will he the track modified qualifyingrecord of 89.641 miles per hour that Hendrick set last season. Due to the expected large field, a ten-lap consolation racc will be held for cars that fail to make the main event.Sunday's action will get under way promptly at 2 p.m.Following Sunday’s opener, the track will be in action again on Sunday, May 5, with a big, 100-mile modified feature heading the program.CARDS CUT LAM ABEST. (AP) ~ The Detroit Tigers said Thursday they have obtained Fred Moulder, a 24-year-old shortstop, to complete Monday’s deal in which veteran pitcher Hank Aguirre wan sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers.Moulder, currently on the Spokane, Wash., roster, was signed by the Dodgers in 1965 from the Universitv of Kansas. He batted .294 in 1986 and .252 in 1967 with minor league teams.The Tigers said he was being assigned to Kocky Mount, the Detroit farm. club in the Class A Carolina League.
