To be eligible to compete in the tournament a wrestler has to place first or second in his state’s respective tournament sometime in his career. The top eight wrestlers in each class are declared All-Americans. There were 512 wrestlers entered in the tournament, representing 43 states.“Tirrell is right up there with everybody in this tournament even though he finished third,” said Northern coach Scott Stough. “I really think his success is a result of his hard work, a lot of time spent in the weight room, and a lot of time spent at off-season wrestling camps.”In his first match, Burdock wrestled Rudy Belloclc the state champion of Arizona, and pinned him in 5:41. Next, Marcos Jean-tete, the state champion of New Mexico, defeated Burdock, 6-5.Burdock them moved to the losers’ bracket and took^n Massachusetts state champion Eric Connolly, who was also fifth in the New England tournament. Kusick beat Burdock in the Maryland tournament, 2-1.There were three other high school All-Americans from the Maryland West Region: Randy Owings, 130-pounder from Francis Scott Key, placed sixth; Zach Yinger, also from Francis Scott Key, placed sixth in the 145-pound division; and heavyweight Mark Janus, also of Francis Scott Key, placed sixth.Jason Swisher, of Beall, beat Janus in the Maryland state tournament.“It was really an outstanding performance from our region,” said Stough. “Plus, they were all Class Double^A kids, small-school kids. It really shows there is some serious talent in our area and that Tirrell, especially, can wrestle with anyone in the country.“He lost early in the tournament, and came back to win six straight matches to place third. When a wrestler loses early in this tournament it’s very tough to come back and perform the way Tirrell did.”
