Hornets Win Elgin Baseball Tournament!aseball team slugged and piteh-d their wav to the champion-hi if in the EJgin baseball tourn-ment held last Thursday, Fri-ay and Saturday, March 28-30. ’his is the first time Caldwell as ever won a baseball tourn-ment championship. ached by Charles Matejows-y, the Hornets beat Elgin 2-0 i the finals. In the opening ame Caldwell heat Elgin's B jam 20 to 0, and in the semi-tnals beat Camp Gary 14 to 8. Allen Garbs and Clarence How-struck out 12 batters and walked only one.ell each had two.In the semi-final game, Caldwell scored their 14 runs on 14 hits, and made seven errors. Camp Gary got their eight runson 10 hits and made six errors.Gregroy Kocurek started on the mound for the Hornets, and went 1 2-3 innings, giving way to Allen Garbs who finished up. Garbs got credit for the win.Leading the hitting attack for Caldwell was Elton Davis who got three hits. Those getting two hits each were Gregory Kocurek, Floyd Kostelka, Paul Batista and Clarence Howell.Hornets placed on the All-Tournament team were Floyd Kostelka, Allen Garbs and Clarence Howell. Garbs was also named the most valuable player in the tournament.Almost everyone in the Hornet line-up hit safely as CaldLast Saturday the Jr. Hor-ets participated in the AM onsolidated Jr. High Meet The eventh Grade team placed fth in the meet. The eighth rade team tied for sixth place. In the seventh grade divi-on Tommy Wyatt won third lace in the high jump. The 440 ml relay team also won third ace.In the eighth grade division avid Knesek won fourth place i the high jump. AM Consolidated got the Caldwell Hornet baseball one run on four hits and com-team gave them a 2-1 win over mitted two errors.The District 17AA Track and Field Meet will be held Saturday April G. The meet will be held on the Blinn College track in Brenham. Caldwell coached by Charles Matejowsky now have a season record of eight wins, one loss and a tie.AM Consolidated scored their only run in the top of the first inning when the first man up got a hit, and stole second.He scored later on two errors committed by the Hornets.Caldwell bounced back in the bottom of the seventh inning.Elton Davis led off the inning and reached base on an error j Batista, 3b by the second baseman. He advanced to third on a single by j Davis, rf James Story to right field. Al- j Story, cf len Garbs then singled off the Totals .... second baseman’s glove, scoring Davis and advancing Story to third. Lucio Mendez then singled between short and third bring- ! ing home Story writh the winning run. All this took place with no outs.Caldwell got their two runs i on seven hits and made fourfourth inning. Robert Kocurek walked with one out, and then stole second. Following a strike cut for the second out, Floyd Kostelka singled to drive in Kocurek with the first run. Paul Batista advanced the runner with a hit and Clarence Howell drove in Kostelka on a hit for the second run.i * ' i'. 4Caldwell got their two runs on three hits, and made three errors afield. Elgin had no runs on two hits, and committed one error.Allen Garbs won his second game in the tournament in the finals. Pitching a very stj-ong game he allowed only two hits,no walks, and struck out 14 batters. Glover was the losing pitcher for Elgin.In the first game Caldwell unloaded on Elgin’s B team, winning 20 to 0. Caldwell got their 20 runs on 15 hits, and made two errors.
