Friday, April 4, 1952CARROLL COLLEGE ENTERTAINS CONFERENCE IN SPRING MEETMay 16-17 marks the dates the annual spring carnival of the Montana Collegiate Conference will be held. This year the bid of Coach John P. Gagliardi to have the track, baseball, tennis and golf tournaments held in Helena, with Carroll College as acting host, was accepted by the conference coaches at a recent meeting held in Bozeman. Last year's spring carnival was heldin Billings with Eastern MontanaCollege as acting host.Elimination games will be held between the two Billings colleges, Rocky and Eastern, and between the School of Mines and Western College, to determine the two teams that will advance to meet Carroll and Northern in the golf, tennis and baseball tournaments. Northern and Carroll are automatically in the tournament as they are the only two teams to represent the Western division. Eastern, Mines, Western and Rocky all fall in the Eastern division. In track all six schools will be represented. Last year's winners, Western and Eastern who tied for first place, will be powerful contenders in the field sport. The School of Mines copped thebaseball championship in the Billings tournament last year by defeating Eastern, 11-8. Carroll’s baseball team also advanced to the carnival by downing the Northern Lights’ nine in a three-game series.Carroll walked off with top honors in the golf tournament when Bill Lannon and Bob Callaghan took first and third respectively. Another golf championship might come to the Hilltop this year if Bill Lannon and Larry Schneider can repeat thefeat.Top honors in tennis were split last year between Western, who won the doubles, and Northern, who won the singles. Neil Dodds and Gil Hahn wore the blue and gold on the courts in the spring carnival last year. Prognosticators for-see a strong showing for Carroll on their side of the net this year also. Aspiring tennis men will try out for the team soon. Golf eliminations will be held within the month also. Baseball enthusiasts will start a full swing outdoor practice as soon as better weather arrives. Track men have been working out in the gym as foul weather has not permitted any outdoor activity.Wait Romasko Named On All-Conference Second Team RosterAt a meeting of the conference coaches in Bozeman on Saturday, March 15, the all-conference basketball team for the 1951-52 season was52 Basketball Awards Given to Co-ChampionsCoach John P. StudentsWins Fifth Pfecs in Jaycee TournamentRecently an editorial appeared in a certain school paper saying to the effect that Carroll should be banned from the Montana Collegiate Conference until they get rid of Coach John P. Gagliardi. I suppose that would be the recommended procedure if they plan on beating Carroll in the future. If spring ever gets here the hilltop will once again be alive with aspirants to varsity track, baseball, tennis and golf teams. Carroll’s football and basketball teams have set a pretty fast pace for Hilltop athletics this year, so good turnouts will be necessary for the continued success.Perhaps it might be wise to offer a word or two of advice or, better yet, warning, to all those who intend to try out for the varsity baseball team: this is going to be f ather Hunthausen's year!!There have been a lot of complaints heard around the hallowed halls about the MCC All-Conference basketball team which was selected a couple of weeks ago. Maybe some of it is partially justified, but it should be looked at from a different light; a tribute to our team! The Campus Idiots came through in fine style to cop the intramural tournament by beating the Lovers. An independent team from Helena, the Helena Merchants, made up entirely of Carroll students participated in the State Jaycee Tournament at Lewistown over the weekend of March 13, 14, and 15, and took fifth place in that tournament. The members of the team were Rich Kuhl, Joe Kelly, who received honorable mention on the all-tournament team, Walt Romasko, chosen all-tournament center, Hal Hunter, Bud Ryan, Tate Fraser, Bunky Sullivan, Claude Weaver, and manager Russ Ritter. The Merchants won their first game over Casper Bluebird Grocery by virtue of a forfeit. In the second game, they defeated the Geyser In-CAPITAL SPORT SHOPMacGREGOR SPAULDING ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT7 West Lawrence Phone 3834dependent team, last years state AAU champions, by 52-43. Their third game resulted in a loss to the Montana Collegians by 71-51. In the fourth game, the Merchants tied with Johnson Construction of Bozeman in the regular time, 48-48. In the overtime, they lost out by a score of 54-52. The result was that they tied for fifth place with Ricker’s Drug of Casper, Wyoming.RCA Victor RadiosVicior—Capital—Decca RecordsCarlson Appliance Co.337 No. MainGAMER’SFINE FOODS FINE CANDIESBuite Helena15 W.
