Joseph (Turkey Trot) Murphy i* a slender young man who aspires to pitching fame. iHe thought it would be a good plan to start out with the eastern House of David team, which annually visits Florida in the spring, and was given promise of a job if he could sprout the right kind of a heard. Murphy let nature take its course and waited In Lakeland, Fla., for tho Davids to come along and pick him up. W hen the club reached there for an exhibition, Turkey Trot, looking a little like old Ben Parnell himself, presented himself to* the manager. Then came the shock. The manager said he wouldn't be able to use him. Murphy went out and got a facial, haircut and a shave and asked Mickey Cochrane of the 'i i.eers to send him to one of the Detroit farms.Mildred (Babe) Didrikson got credit for a scoreless pitching perform-, ance and the Brooklyn Dodgers earned a white mark for chivalry when the noted all-round girl athlete worked an inning on the mound for the Athletics against the men of Casey Stengel in a game of March 20. All these things happened in the inning: Danny Taylor, first up, was thwarted in a seeming attempt to strike out when the girl’s pitches were too wide for him to make a show of swinging at them; Johnny Frederick was right in the way of an inside delivery; Joe Stripp, a gallant fellow, lined to Dil W iliiams and it was all over, because Dib tossed the ball to Warst-second, doubling Taylor, and W iliiams got the sphere to first base when Frederick was still off that ag. Then a triple play, and a bow rom the chivalrous Dodgers!
