Overtime goal settles NCHL championshipFOXWARREN- Terry Lyttle's goal at 1:13 of sudden death overtime gave the Foxwarren Falcons a 9-8 win over the Shoal Lake Eagles and the North Central Hockey League championship here on Sunday evening.Lyttle’s goal came after the teams battled to an 8-8 regulation time tie and also were scoreless through a 10-minute overtime period.For the Falcons, it was their first N.C.H.L. championship since the 1970-71 season. The Eagles, who were defending champipns, lost in the final series for the fourth time in the last five years.The Eagles never held a lead throughout the game and used some last period heroics to pull out the regulation time tie.Trailing 7-4 at the end of the second period, the Eagles and Falcons traded goals early in the third frame. Then, in under three minutes of play, the Eagles scored three times to tie the score.Foxwarren had led 3-1 at the end of the first period. The Eagles did manage to tie the score 3-3 early in the second period but the Falcons grabbed the lead again just 8 seconds later.The Falcons again received excellent goal tending from veteran Cal Harrison. Harrison, who is a true competitor, stymied the Eagles on numerous good scoring opportunities, including a two-man breakaway in the first overtime period.Lyttle’s goal came about after he and Stan Furman got the puck past a Shoal Lake defenseman at the Falcons’ blueline, skated in all alone on net-minder Dale Hladun and hoisted the puck over the sprawled Shoal Lake goalie.Furman. Bryan Glasman and Neil Failoon each scored twice for the winners. Kirk Lyttle and Brad Bulbuck also tallied for the Falcons.Peter Baydak. Larry Gerelus and Jamie Kaslriw had a pair of goals each for the Eagles. Dennis Nychuk and Robin Kimpinalri notched singles.The Falcons played the game without three of their key players. Los Simms (broken arm), Lonnie Lougheed (cracked wrist) and Blair Lee (league suspension) were not dressed and forced the Falcons to play with only two lines.Referee Frank Taylor of Minnedosa let the teams play hockey for the most part, assessing the Falcons 8 of 13 minor penalties.BENCH BITS- Coach Susinski decided to bench defenseman Rick Nychuk for much of the game, electing to use rookies Brian Hladun and Ashley Barlow on the blueline along with double-shifting forward Garth Short. Presumably Susinski’s decision was based on Nychuk's first period performance when he was on the ice for two goals. He couldn’t be blamed for the other seven... Two veterans, Peter Baydak and Larry Gerelus played strong games for the Eagles... The Eagles connected on two powerplay goals, while the Falcons managed only one. The Eagles also had a shorthanded effort... Jim Ellis was dressed for the Falcons but never saw a shift in three games.Furman buries EaglesBlair Lee had a four point evening for the Falcons on two goals and two assists. Neil Failoon and Bryan Glasman also tallied for the winners, who led 5-1 after forty minutes of play.Peter Baydak with a pair, Ken Ostash and Dennis Nychuk replied for the Eagles.The Eagles were assessed 8 of 15 minor penalties called by referee Barry Deimage of Minnedosa. The teams each received a fighting major and game misconduct after the Eagles’ Jamie Kaskiw and the Falcons' Blair Lee engaged in fisticuffs late in the game.SHOAL LAKE— Veteran winger Stan Furman scored three times to lead the Foxwarren Falcons to a 7-4 win over the Shoal Lake Eagles to even their N.C.H.L. final series 1-1 on Friday, March 29.The Falcons jumped out into a 4-1 first period lead and showed the form that gave them the North Division regular season title.The Falcons received standout net-minding from Cal Harrison, who several times robbed the Eagles of sure goals.Defensively the Eagles had their problems and netminder Dale Hladun had a busy evening.Falcons take lead in MAHA final seriesFOXWARREN- Brad Bulbuck scored three goals to pace the Foxwarren Falcons to a 10-7 win over the St.Lazare Outlaws on March 27, to take a 2-1 series lead in the Intermediate ‘D’ playoff game.Firing a pair of goals for the Falcons was Blair Lee, while Stan Furman.Brian Glasman, Terry Lyttle, Bob Paradine and Kirk Lyttle. added singles.Dan Lemoine had two goals for the Outlaws, while teammates Carl Lepine,Carl Haney, Raymond Fouillard, David Haney and Allan Rittaler, contributed with singles.The fourth, and possibly deciding game, will be played in Birtle on Wednesday.
