FiCHIATOSS IIP“PHANTOM SEES TACK JOHSSOS A-\D JL.SS WLLLAKD TRAINJOHNSON IS IN BAD SHAPEWhjle Willard iff iu Good Shape But a Bad Boxer; Long B6nt Enrorsthe Cowboy.73;r 3Uke Gibbons.HAVANA, April 3—They showed me yesterday, or rather they didn't. I saw both men work and now tell you my first impressions without prejudice. I am not picking a winner, you understand, but giving my impressions I liked Johnson when I landed in Cuba and cid not think Willard had much chance. Willard, a bad boxer, but In great condition, against Johnson, a finished boxer, in bad condition, which will it be? I saw Jess first. He was very slow' and tried no rights for five rounds and then only once. He had a fair left jab that sticks out straight and some times true. I must say as a championship contender he didn't show me much. I am not trying to be too critical. The nose punch got him sore and hecashed in and slugged. He must notlose his head that way. He gets offbalance Coo much. He feints gome but when he misses he is ofT balance. Also, he is seldom on balance as hisopponent misses. But such a condition 1s seldom seen.Johnson is so big I was surprised. He sweats just thinking about the fight. He puffs badly and seems to tire easily but he is boxing as great as ever. He feints beautifully, slips liis head fast, blocks with precision aDd generally shows the finished article hut. sweats like a sponge. This may or may not be a good sign. I think it is a bad one. He osght to be dryer now. three days before thefight. If Willard is game enough to stand the gaff for a time, say ten or twelv'3 rounds, the other fellow may blowr up like a balloon. He just must not loose his head at any stage. He Is llnale to get a heavy lacing in the early stages and if he can weatherthis all right his condition is just good enough to win jC he's careful in other respects and doesn't slip his jaw into a damaging punch in the early stages. Another bad point, perhaps, is that Willard is fighting the champion and this is a tough condition on most men's nerves. It it doesn't effect Jess and cause him to worry well and good. As for the betting I .think it is even money or ought to be. Right now I look them over again today andwill give my final conclusion.
