Stef fey lifts Queens into golf regionalBy CARL Gl’YS News-Herald Writer The Del Rio varsity golfing Queens took the runnerup spot behind the San Antcnio Clark Lady Cougars and Del Rio’s Missy Steffey finished second to San Antenio Holmes' Molly Harden for medalist honors over last weekend’s two-day. 38-hole District 28-5A golf tournament at San Felipe Country Club.Clark won the district team trophy with a total scores of 778 strokes or. rounds of 384-394. Host Del Rio earned the other regional tourney spot w ith a team score of W9 on 443 end 446 rounds.Harden won her title on rounds of 89-81 for a total of 170 strokes Steffey had 81-91 for a two day total of 179.. John Marshall of San Antonio had a 515 team score after the first round Friday but had to withdraw as a team when oneof their players took 111. The Costlllo sisters. Naomi and Annette, scored 116 and 120 and Sofia Shields added a 120 Holmes’other player. Marie Perei, shot a 104.Del Rio golf coach Bob Needham, who also directed the tournament, reported that the Lady Cougars won the title by 59 strokes with Mary Macias as their catalyst. ’’She had »l and 91 for a 185 score. Then came Laura Richter with Bk-91 for 194 and Stephanie Paul with 98-109 for 207 and Vickie Gor.eales with 247 on rounds of 115 and 132 strokes. Needham explained.The runnerup Del Rloans had Stcffey’s 179 as tops followed by Kay Zorn with 108-114 for 222. Jennifer Dean with 228 on two Identical 114 rounds and Shannon Hopkins with 127-153 for 260 strokesHarden shot her way to a two stroke lead over Steffey 41-45 over the front nine Friday but Missy caught and passed Molly with a 45 to 48 back nine to take the lead for medalist after the first day's play. Then on Saturday the Holmes swinging star went out in a neat 39 and Missey had i 44.
