By FKANK BUCKINGHAMBASKETBALL BRAVES DID CREDITABLE JOB - Compet-ii*? in one of Iowa’s strongest basketball conference s-theLakes-4. herokee did not blossom as a power during 1969-70. . .But don't count the Braves and Coach Hay Knauer out of the picture forever. . .In a league dominated by the giants from the land of Storm Lake and Spencer, the Tribe acquitted itself well. . .Storm Lake was the Class AA state finalist and won 24 straight before bowing to Davenport Central in the Iowa championship game. . .En route to the state tournament tlie Tornadoes sidelined Spencer. . .Otherwise, there's little doubt that the Tigers would have been one of the eight Class AA's at Vets Auditorium..But back to Cherokee: They won 11 and lost 9 and played Storm Lake a scary 30-24 contest in midwinter before tlie Green and White fled tlie premises with their lives. • .Cherokee averaged 58.1 points per game as a team and had 55.5 as a defensive average. . .The Braves scored 1162 total points to 1109 for opponents. . .leading scorer was promising junior pivot Mark Perrin who nailed 303 points. . .Perrin, named to the second All-Lakes Conference selections, hit for 130 field goals at a 44 percent field pace sank 43 free throws for 57 percent and retrieved 178rebounds. . .That's a solid season's work. . .Duane Johnson was runnerup in individual scoring with 242 counters. . JBiond Duane struck for 42 percent from tlie field, getting 93 goals and sifted 56 percent of his free throws with a total of 56. . . Johnson, at times extremely rugged on tlie glass, pulled off 221 rebounds to top all Braves. . .Steve Orchard sank 165 total points, splitting Hie webbing with 67 fielders for 43 percent from the field. . .Orchard hit 31 free flips for 58 percent at the line. . .and had 38 rebounds. . .Bob Krommendyk was fourth in scoring and tlie oilier Brave to net more than 100 points with 134. . JBob ended with 55 baskets and 44 percent for tlie season. .. He plunked in 24 free tosses for 57 shooting at the charily stripe.. and also nabbed 37 rebounds. ..Among others: Arnie Stevenson, 96 points, 39 field goals, 37 percent, 18 free throws, 55 percent, 54 rebounds; Al Wichten-dahl, 74 points, 31 field goals, 36 percent, 12 free tosses, 60 percent at tlie stripe, 41 rebounds; Chuck Bergen, 65 points, 25 field goals, 35 percent, 15 free throws, 56 percent, 86 rebounds. . .Cherokee outgoaled foes, 470-417. . .And something else. ..the Braves webbed in 40 percent plus of their shots from tlie floor. . . There are many clubs who fail to measure up to that. . .
