RECORD ASCENT, FROM ANY AWSLE—Plastic balloonwhich reached a record altitude of 143,000 feet—more than27 miles—is shown in this unusual prelaunching view, looking upward at the inflated bag from position of the instrument gondola. The triangular shape is due to pyramidal construction of the big gas bag, built by the University of Minnesota and launched from a site near Minneapolis. Defense Department is expected to make use of data gathered by instruments as the balloon cruised in near-space to further the earth satellite program.
