I MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 7 W — Aj helium-filled plastic balloon soared to 142,900 feet, about 26 4-5 miles,; today to break all existing altitude records for such bags, the (University of Minnesota reported. I ; The balloon, built of mylar, aj new plastic compound, was pyramidal in shape, 180 feet long andj earned one million cubic feet of helium under its thousandth-of-an; inch-thick skin.IK Pound LoadEdward P. Ney and John R.j Wincklei of the Minnesota physics department, who designed andconducted the experiment, said the; ascent was about 20,000 feet above the previous record of 125.000 set last year by a bag sent up over Minnesota by Winzen Research, Inc., Bloomington, Minn.Ney said the big bag. launched by a crew of 12 at the nearby] Anoka Airport this morning, car-jried a 48-pound payload.
