Weather Balloon Comes To EarthAP WirephotoThe instrument capsule attached to a balloon which hovered over the La Crosse area late Thursday and early Friday crashed to earth on an abandoned farm near Fond du Lac Friday afternoon. The 400-foot balloon, belonging to Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., was launched from Sioux Falls, S.D. by the National Aeronatics andSpace Administration on Wednesday. The balloon prompted UFO reports in Iowa. Illinois and Wisconsin where it appeared like a bright planet in night skies. Thetruck-sized capsule was released from its balloon and floated to earth under a parachute, settling on an old car. The balloon was found in shreds several miles away.
