Humbert.All members of the DePauw faculty for at least IS vears. they are Dr. Andrew \V. Crandall, history; Dr. Winona H. Welch, botany and bacteriology; and Dr. Fredrick L. Bergmann. English.On July 1. 1956. they will sue-ceed Drs. George B. Manhart. Truman G. Yuncker. and A Virginia Hailow, respectively, retiring heads who will assume the status of emeritus professors.Dr. Crandall came to DePauw in 1921 on his first college teaching assignment and since thattime has bee rune one of the nation's leading authorities on theBattle of Gettysburg. **A graduate of Central Collegein Missouri and iccipicnt of the master's degree from the University of Chicago, he earned the Ph. D. degree at the Universityof Pennsylvania.He is a two-time veteran ofoverseas duty with the U. S. Ar-tr’my, serving as an infantry lieutenant in the first world \\ai and as a major in military intelligence during World War II.Author of the book, '‘Early History of the Republican Party. and assistant archivist at DePauw. Dr. Crandall annually delivers public lectures on the Gettysburg engagement.A 1925 DePauw alumna Dr. Welch returned here in 1950 after heading the biology department at Central Normal College and instructing in botany at Indiana University.She was named the first wo-mah president of the IndianaAcademy of Science in 1948 andalso h;rs hflPTod both the American Rrvological Sovietv and Sig-rna Delta Epsilon science frater-;.it\ for women. vMjRom in Jasper County, Dr.Welch is known throughout thescientific world for her research in the field of mosses and is theauthor of numerous articles and monographs concerning thosestudies. . -vjRecipient of the M.
