May Shoot Down BalloonWASHINGTON lt;UP!) — The Navy said Thursday that Jet fighters may have to shoot down Lhe wAyward Skyhook balloon, now heading west over 1he Pacific.The 40-story high ''Skyhook Glynco” for two days has defeated all efforts to retrieve It and its precious cosmic ray research data.Early Thursday evening, a Navy spokesman said the balloon had climbed to 75,000 feet and was Bo miles west of San Diego, Calif.The Navy had hoped It would descend to 65,000 feet or lower where an east wind might carry It Inland.Wo arc considering shooting down the balloon if It becomes necessary and feasible.” the spokesman said.
