Balloonbypasses TucsonThat giant balloon loaded with scientific gear that was supposed to land near Tucson was up, up and away yesterday, but it missed the Old Pueblo by several hundred miles. As the paper-thin balloon floated across the Southwest from its launch point at the National Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Tex., itnever dipped south of Phoenix. It landed early this morning about 50 miles north of Parker, near the California border.Toting a 2,000-pound telescope and 52.6 million cubic feet of helium, the balloon made the trek in 13 hours and 20 minues at an altitude of 150,000 feet, the spokesman said. The project was undertaken for two professors at Massachusetts Institute of Technology who wanted to detect high-energy X-rays from sources inside and outside the galaxy.
