Ton Of Beeping Silver Is Only X-Ray FinderTUSKEGEE, Ala (AP) - It was a close encounter, but not much of one as it turned out. A large silvery object emitting a beeping noise was found about seven miles south of Tuskegee Friday, and officials sealed the area off.“We don’t know what it is,” said Maj. John Meadows of the Tusk ogee Police Department. A bomb squad was called in from Fort Benning, Ga , to investigate and civil defense officials also got into the act.Meadows said there were numbers on the object, which was '“about the size of a Volkswagen’’ and u parachute was attachedThen came the answer.It was an X-ray detector used by the University of California at San Diego to study the radiation coming from astar which exploded and ceased to exist about 1066 A.D - the year William the Conquerer took over England.Ralph Harju, an official with the National Scientific Balloon Facility at Palestine: Texas, said the instrument was launched Thursday and was downed after the experiment was completedBut the descent, he added, was miscalculatedHarju said a team from the balloon facility arrived to recover the 2.000-lb. detector and the 1,240-square-foot balloonThe bomb squad, told what was up, returned to its base.Harju said that there are 80 to 85 similar flights each year, and many are mistaken for UFOs.
