AG foes are both accusedINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Voters face an uncertain decision in Indiana’s attorney general race.Both Republican Tim Bookwalter and Democrat Pam Carter have been criticized for their handling of their taxes, personal finances and debts. Both have been accused of being unqualified to manage the office.But both also are eager to get beyond the controversy and demonstrate why they think Indiana’s attorney general could provide better service.The attorney general represents the state in lawsuits and in appeals of t criminal prosecutions. The office s also represents state officials in lawsuits and gives legal opinions to the governor and members of the General Assembly.In addition, the attorney general’s consumer protection division serves - as a watchdog over fraudulent and . deceptive business practices.State Republican chairman Rex Early this summer attacked Carter for missing 22 deadlines for paying property taxes since January 1989. It was an indication, he said, that she n- was unable to run the attorney gener-ig al’s office.The Indianapolis Star later reported ii- that Carter and her husband Michael a had filed for bankruptcy in 1985 to xt escape pressure from creditors.
