When the news of tho threatened siege of Lawrence reached John’ Brown*, Jr., who wdu a member of the Topeka Leg-islature, lie organised a company of about sixty men and marched towards Lawrence. Arriving at Palmyra he learned of the sacking of the town, and the position of the people. He recounottered for » t:rue in the vicinity, but finally marched back toward* 0*awnioti»ie. The ni^ht before reaching that place, when only a few tuiica uway, they camped tor tho night. Old John Brown, who wu b.lweu was with the party, singled out, with himself, seven men. These he marched to a point eight miles above the raouth of Poiuwataraie creek, and called from their beds at thei^ye^L rtiidences, at tho bonr of roidoighr, tbe^4th of May, Allen Wilkinson, wm.
