UP1 TelephotoChile’s Raul Bazan Davila and Saudi Arabia’s Jamil Baraody Argue At UN RostrumSay Vou Apologize. Nobody Has Ever Called Me A FoolFool/ ‘Liari Shouted at UNUNITED NATIONS (UPI) — Shoving and shouting diplomats screamed “fool and “liar .at each other across the General Assembly podium Wednesday after the Soviet bloc made an appeal against the execution of a Communist leader by Chile’s military junta.Soviet Ambassador Yakov A. Malik touched off the situation by demanding that Assembly President Leopold Benites of Equador and Secretary-General £urt Waldhiem intercede with the Santiago regime to pre-vent the execution of Sen. Luis Corvalun Lcpe, secretary of the outlawed Chilean Communist Party. This brought Chilean Ambassador Raul Bazan Davila to the dais with an objection. Malik interrupted the Chilean, contending he was not, as the rules require, confining himself to a point of order. At this juncture, Saudi Arabian Ambassador Jamil M. Baroody, who has a long reputation of moving into such situations, asked the assembly to drop the dispute without hearing the 10 Soviet bloc speakers before the Chilean's turn came.Bazan stood at the side of the rostrum while Baroody talked. When the Saudi Arabian referred to the post-revolution conditions in Chile, Bazan was heard to say, “Fool!Baroody, who ts over 70, pushed his way to the side of the speakers stand where Bazan stood, and thrusting his body toward the younger man, vigorously shook his finger at him.“Say you .apologize, Baroody said. “Nobody has ever called me a fool.“You are a liar, Bazan retorted.F. Bradford Morse, the American undersecretary of stare in charge of General Assembly affairs, left his scat on the high dais and interceded, acting like a boxing referee.Benites eventually ruled that Bazan must wait his turn to speak after Malik and the Soviet bloc delegates were heard. When Bazan gained the microphones, he denied Malik's report that Corvalan was to be executed. He said he was in good health awaiting a military tribunal.Bazan said the Chilean Communist was accused of organizing against the new military regime that deposed the late Marxist President Salvador Allende in September Waldheim telephoned the Chilean Embassy and appealed for clemency.
