(iles seeks district nominationBy Bob von SternbergStaff Writer Following what she called “a lot of thought and advice,” KSU Vice President for Public Affairs and Development Fay Biles announced her candidacy Tuesday for the Republican nomination for the 62nd District seat in the Ohio General Assembly.Sen. Robert Stockdale will act as Gieneral campaign chairperson and Kent assistant prosecutor Jerry Hayes will assist in managing Biles’ bid to unseat Democratic incumbent Rep. Marcus Roberto.The 62nd House district comprises 13 of 20 townships in Portage County, including Kent and Ravenna.Biles said she had recieved “strong support and pressure” to run for the House seat from Republican party officials at both the local and state level.According to Richard Kertschner, chairperson of the Portage County Republican Executive Committee, Biles “has recieved support from myself as chairman, she has the support of all the leaders in the party and she will have the support of the executive board of the party.“As far as 1 know now, she will recieve no opposition in the May primary.”If she wins the November general election, she will resign her vice president’s post, Biles added, calling the House seat “too large a job to do justice to both positions.”Although Biles said she remains unsure of the manner of conducting and financing the campaign at this early date, Stockdale said the recruitment of from “50 to 150 people to assist the campaign will be the main focus for now.”Stressing the importance ofpublic education as a statewide issue, as well as the growth potential of Portage County, Bile said, “there is a special need for education to have a champion” in the county now that Stockdale has retired from the Senate.Citing her 25 years’ experience in education, she said, “I think I know theproblems well,” and advocated more substantial financial slupport for education on the state level.“Education needs additional champions in the Ohio legislature.
