Govf. urgedto spend more onpre-schoolersThe Deputy Director of the United State* Agency for intemationaf Development, Dr. Frank Morris, expressed the hope yesterday that the Government would channel more re sources towards the education of Jamaican 3-6 year olds, stating that Many national educational policy which does not accord great priority to this cruual youth sector is a shortsighted one.”He made these comments about the education of Jamaican pre-schoolers before presenting a USAID gift of more than $30,000 ro the Jamaica Federation of Women to cover operational expenses at 11 Federation sponsored basic schools in Kingston, Sr. Thomas, St. Elizabeth, and Hanover,The Federation received a similar grant from US* AID to finance its basic school operations in July, 1982,After pointing out that the experiences, stimulation, education which children receive during the first six years of life have tremendous impact on their later growth and development, Dr, Morns commended the JFW for having “ the foresight to make basic school education one of us pnonnes,” and for working assiduously for the upliftmcnt of Jamaican women and children.Several Jamaica Federation qf Women executive members including Chairman Miss Mavis Watts, President, Lady Allan, and Mn». Lucille Miller, Vice President and Co-ordinator of the basic school support project, spoke of the the problems and successeswhich the JFW had met in operating basic schools, which receive minimal support from the Government.ifMrs. Lucille Miller of Lucea , Hanover proudly stated that the Jamaica Federation of Women had pioneered basK schools in Jamaica in the 1970V’ after realizing that many very young children throughout Jamaica were being left “to run wild” inspite of developments m primary education and other areas of youth development.She also spoke of the hardships involved in operating the Federation's 56 basic schools, of the low level of Government support which these school’s receive and the JFW’s efforts to mobilize community support for pre-primary level education throughout Jamaica.The JFW received an assurance of continued USAID support for its basic schools from Deputy Director Dr. Frank Morns.
