SENATE HAILS NEW MEMBERThe Senate yesterday welcomed and swore in its ' newest member, Senator Hazel Monteith, social worker and director of the Citizen’s' Advice Bureau.Senator Monteith, who is also host of the popular morning radio programme named after the Bureau, re-Mrs Hazel Monteith ...social concernsplaces Mrs. Barbara Blake-Hanna, who was one of the eight Independent Senators appointed in 1984 following the boycott of rhe 1933 General Elections by the PNP.4Mrs. Blake-Hanna, a journalist, who spoke on social and cultural matters for the Independent Opposition in the Senate, resigned in Majrch for what she said were “personal reasons”. However, since that shehas announced an intention to contest General Elections as-an Independent, She has always been .strongly vocal in supporr .of Independent politics.In welcoming the new Senator, the President of the Senate, the Hon. Jeanette Gr*nt-‘Woodham, said: “You have earned the admiration and respect of your fellow Jamaicans, and it is fitting that the Hon. Prime Minister has recommended your appointment to His Excellency, the Governor General* to become a' Member of this Senate and so place you in a position to' further your work in nation-building and the upholding of democracy.“You are a person of high integrity and your commitment to Jamaica is expressed m your concern’ for“I hopParliamenpopulation control and the need for proper ipirennng. Yon are a keen social worker and a devout Baptist whose concern for consumer affairs and protection of the poor and oppressed on our country is well known throughoi t Jamaica.that your sojourn in this will be full of very rewarding rhqments and that you will $erveyour country with added distinction.”Senator Monteith was also welcomed by the Leader of Government Business, rhe Hon, Oswald Harding, and the Independent Opposition leader; Senator Lloyd Barnett.Senator Grant-Woodham also praised Mrs. Blake-Hanna for her concern (foi social and economic problems [during her tenure and said that, perhaps, she will be best remembered tor her resolution on the observance of the centenary of the Ri.
