Dist. 169 to Name Two Board MembersOn Saturday, East Chicago Heights voters will have an opportunity to elect two members to School District 169 board of education.Contending for the three-year terms are Mrs Williams and Willie M. Rush, incumbents; Mrs. Gloria Bryant; Charles McCary; Mrs Marcella Johnson, and Theodore France.Willie M. Rush, 29, who has an associate in arts degree in business administration from Prairie State college, has been employed by Ford Motor company for 10 years. He also is a partner in Rush and Sons grocery.Rush recently was charged with possession of stolen property after refrigerators were found in an apartment building which he manages in the village. The refrigerators were reported stolen in February from the Cook county housing authority. The case willGloria BryantMarcella Johnsonbe heard April 15 by Judge Alvin Turner in the Chicago Heights branch of Circuit court.The other incumbent, Mrs. Williams, is business manager of Cook county housing authority in the village. Mrs. Williams, the mother of three daughters, attended Roosevelt university and Wilson junior college.SHE HAS been a member of the East Chicago Heights Health council for 10 years, a member of the village Head-start-Day Care advisory board, past treasurer of Cottage Grove PTA and a member of the village community service center board of directors.According to Rush and Mrs. Williams, they have “faithfully fulfilled their commitments to you” (District 169 residents). Major strides, they said, have been made in improving the educational work of the district.“More remains to be accomplished. It is very important to utilize the experience and knowledge of these two board members to carry forward the objectives of the present administration for enriched educational achievement of our boys and girls,” according to the incumbents’ campaign literature.ANOTHER CONTENDER forthe school board is Mrs. Gloria Bryant, executive director of the East Chicago Heights Community Service center and the mother of four children. A former secretary in School District 169, Mrs. Bryant is enrolled at Governors State university (GSU).She serves on the advisory' committee to the College of Hunian Learning and Development of GSU. She is a member of the East Chicago Heights public library committee and a secretary' to the Independent party in the village.“I have attended, worked for, taught in ( adult education) and sent my children to School District 169; this should explain my interest in becoming aboard member,” Mrs. Bryant said.She said she is committed to seek every available resource “to further stimulate the educational and social development of the district’s youth. She also wants “to work diligently with both board and staff to create an atmosphere that will be conducive to working out district problems amiably.”CHARLES MCCARY, ajuvenile officer for East Chicago Heights police and letter carrier for Riverdale post office, is another candidate for the school board. McCary is the father of four children.He has completed about 10 different courses in youth training and has attended Prairie State college. He is a member and officer of the South Suburban Juvenile Officers association, and a member of the International Juvenile File association.McCary would like to see better communications between the school board and the community. Other suggestions are. better truancy and discipline program; fewer students in classrooms; a good lunch program in all schools; a testing program at kindergarten level to locate possible slow . learners; better preparation of children in beginning years, and regularly scheduled inspections of school buildings by board members.Charles McCary“If I am elected, I will do my best to work with the entire board to make all of these things come true. I will welcome all of your ideas and criticism,” McCary said.ALSO VYING for a school board seat is Mrs Marcella Johnson, mother of 10 children.She is an employ ee of the East Chicago Heights Community Service center as a community co-ordinator in the social service department, food buying club, food stamp program and Operation Nutrition. She also tias worked with the youth recreationOra Williamsprogram at the centerBy being a member of the school board, I will be a great help to the children. If our students were better prepared for Bloom high school, there would be a smaller dropout rate.“There are many things the children in our district need.
