Miss Edna Haviland Discusses Work During Program At Central Friends Annex Last Night. Miss Edna Haviland, Friends missionary to Ram Allah, Pales tine, who has been in this section for the past week, spoke last night to the supper group at Central Friends annex on her work abroad and the things being accomplished through missions in Palestine. Miss Haviland related bits of his tory of the two boarding schools in Ram Allah, sponsored by the So ciety of Friends, and several hu man interest stories to illustrate the changes in living conditions which have been effected there through their influence. These schools, Miss Haviland reminded her listeners, were founded in the late sixties by Sybil and Eli Jones, of South China, Me., who were interested in the project by a bright native girl who asked them, while they were on a visit to the Holy Land, to help her people in this way. A school was soon started and this girl placed in charge. A little later a school for boys was started. Both have now grown until each has a student enrollment of over 100. Both schools are managed as near as possible by the natives themselves. At the present time Dr. Khalil Totah, who was educated in the school is in charge of the boys’ mission. After going through the school at Ram Allah, Dr. Totah came to this country and studied at Columbia university where he received a degree of doctor of phil osophy. Conditions have greatly changed in Palestine within the last 15 years, Miss Haviland declared. The living conditions when she first went there, she stated, were un speakable. Now they have been improved until most of the people live in comparative comfort. The standard of living has been greatly raised, she said. Others scheduled on the pro gram last night were unable to be present. O. E. Mendenhall pre sided as toastmaster and Miss Dorothy Gardyne was the pep timist. At the conclusion of the supper program, the monthly church conference was held. An interesting report at this time was made of the recent quarterly meet ing held at Oak Hill church by Miss Mae Frazier. The last of these supper meetings will be held next week.
