Dupree of the Belmont Prarie Preservation society. He will slow slides andacquaint members with the problems involved in acquiring Belmont Prairie, a 10-acre virgin prairie near Downers Grove.Similiar to the larger Gens-burg Markham prairie in Markham, the Belmont prairie contains more than 100 species of prairie flowers and grasses, many of which have disappeared from other areas in Illinois where they were once abu-dant.BIOLOGISTS ARE trying to save the few remaining prairie remnants in order to understand what Illinois was like before cornfields and cities took over. According to the Illinois chapter of the Nature Conservancy, most residents of the “Prairie State” have never seen a real native prairie and would be unable to distinguish one from a field overgrownwith the non-native, Eurasian weeds that adapt to easily to disturbed areas The Nature Conservancy is involved in the effort to save Belmont prairie. The audubon society’s next field trip will be to McGinnis Slough on Saturday, October 9 Members will meet at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of Sand Ridge Nature center to share rides Meetings are held in the back room of the nature center on the first Friday of each month.
